Fabric Weight Reference

Understanding GSM in garment manufacturing

GSM — grams per square metre — is the standard measure of fabric weight used across the garment trade. It affects the drape, warmth, durability, and FOB cost of the finished garment. Specifying the correct GSM in your order brief or tech pack is one of the most important steps in getting an accurate price.

If you are unsure of the GSM you need, share a reference garment or describe the end use. Our team will recommend the appropriate weight and fabric construction based on your target market and price point.

SDF sources fabric from GOTS and GRS certified mills for sustainable orders, and from audited conventional mills for standard orders. We do not source from unaudited mills and every fabric order includes origin documentation.

Import Duty Advantages by Market

How trade agreements reduce your landed cost on garments

GSP status and preferential trade schemes can reduce import duty by 8–15% compared to sourcing from countries without preferential access. Combined with production costs 20–30% lower than equivalent certified factories in China or Turkey, the total cost advantage for EU, UK, and Australian buyers is significant.

European Union

EU GSP — Everything But Arms

Bangladesh garments qualify for 0–12% reduced import duty depending on HS code. Woven and knitwear garments under HS chapters 61 and 62 qualify for significantly reduced rates. Applies automatically to certified origin goods — SDF provides full origin documentation.

→ 0–12% duty reduction

United Kingdom

UK DCTS — Enhanced Preferences

Under the UK Developing Countries Trading Scheme post-Brexit, Bangladesh garments access the UK market on comparable preferential rates to the former EU GSP. UK importers get the same competitive duty advantage as EU buyers. UK-specific origin certificates provided on request.

→ 0–12% duty reduction

United States

C-TPAT Certification

Bangladesh does not have full GSP status for garments with the US. However, SDF's C-TPAT certification means US importers experience reduced customs screening and faster port clearance, lowering demurrage and improving supply chain predictability.

→ Faster clearance

Australia

DFQF Scheme

Australia's Duty-Free Quota-Free scheme provides 0% import duty on garments from Bangladesh for Australian importers. SDF provides all required documentation for DFQF claims at no additional charge.

→ 0% duty

Certification Verification

Do not accept certificate images without verifying them

Certificate images can be manipulated or out of date. Every major certification body publishes a real-time database where buyers can verify a certificate is current, held by the correct entity, and covers the scope claimed. If a garments manufacturer cannot provide a verifiable certificate number, the claim is unconfirmed.

SDF publishes all 13 certificate numbers on our certifications page alongside direct links to each body's verification tool. Every certificate is active and within its validity period.

We accept unannounced factory visits from buyer-appointed audit firms at any time. Previous BSCI and SEDEX SMETA audit reports are available to serious buyers under NDA before placing an order.

EU Regulatory Requirements 2026

What EU brands need from their garments manufacturer from 2026

Three EU regulations are changing what garments manufacturers need to document and what brands need to demonstrate. Most manufacturers are not ready for all three.

EU Digital Product Passport

Requires a digital record per product covering materials, production location, certifications, and end-of-life data. SDF provides full material traceability with every order — covering the majority of DPP data requirements for GOTS, GRS, and OEKO-TEX certified garments.

Check your EU readiness →

EU CSDDD

Requires EU companies to document human rights and environmental due diligence across their supply chain. Non-compliance: fines up to 5% of global net turnover. SDF holds BSCI, SEDEX SMETA, SA8000, WRAP, and ISO 14001 — the core certifications that satisfy CSDDD supplier requirements.

EU Green Claims Directive

From 2026, sustainability claims on products require recognised third-party certification. "Organic", "recycled", "sustainable" without a certificate are illegal under this directive in EU markets. GOTS, GRS, OEKO-TEX, and OCS — all held by SDF — are specifically recognised under this directive.

Questions

Garment manufacturing — what trade buyers ask

What duty advantages do I get sourcing from here?

EU buyers: 0–12% reduced duty under EU GSP. UK buyers: 0–12% under UK DCTS Enhanced Preferences. Australian buyers: 0% under DFQF. US buyers: no GSP on garments, but C-TPAT certification means faster port clearance. SDF provides all origin documentation for duty claims. Use our free Garment Cost Calculator to see your exact landed cost including duty savings.

How do I verify your certifications?

Every certificate is publicly verifiable. Certificate numbers for all 13 are on our certifications page with direct links to each body's database. GOTS at gots.org. OEKO-TEX at oeko-tex.com. GRS at textileexchange.org. Do not accept a certificate image without checking the number is current.

What is GSM and how do I specify it?

GSM is grams per square metre — the weight of the fabric. It affects hand-feel, warmth, durability, and price. A standard T-shirt is 170–200 GSM. A standard hoodie is 300–340 GSM. Include the target GSM in your brief or tech pack. If unsure, share a reference garment and we will match it.

What compliance documentation do you provide for EU buyers?

GOTS or OEKO-TEX certificates, BSCI or SEDEX audit reports, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certificates, and full material traceability documentation. All required for EU CSDDD due diligence and Digital Product Passport compliance. Use our free EU Readiness Checker to see exactly what your brand needs before contacting us.

What is the lead time?

Knitwear bulk: 40 days from approved sample. Woven: 45–55 days. Proto sample: 7–14 days. First order total: 45–60 days knitwear, 55–70 days wovens. Repeat orders with approved samples: 35–45 days. Use our free Production Timeline Calculator to reverse-engineer every deadline from your target launch date.

What is the MOQ?

300 pieces per style with flexible size and colour split. For orders above 1,000 pieces per style, per-unit pricing improves significantly. We do not accept consumer orders or retail purchases.
